New Courses for September 2010

Tameside College have new courses to offer from September 2010 and are taking applications now.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Forensic Studies is an academic programme of study that prepares students to progress onto university. The modules studied are Psychology, Criminology and Science. Students will study units such as the origins of criminology, social explanations of crime, reliability of evidence, clinical microbiology, experimental chemistry and complete a research project.
The entry requirements for this subject are GCSE’s in Maths and English or Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy. You will also be required to demonstrate an understanding of scientific methods. You could study the BTEC National Diploma in Vehicle Repair and Technology (Motorsports) at Tameside College this September.
This Level 3 course is aimed at learners who want to study on an academic programme which also includes practical content. The programme consists of 5 core units & 13 specialist units and is full-time for two years. The qualification covers:
- operation of vehicle systems
- vehicle fault diagnosis and rectification
- vehicle technology project
- motorsport workshop practices
- motorsport vehicle preparation & inspection
Specialist units include:
- computer aided drafting
- mathematics for technicians
- properties and application of engineering materials
- vehicle engine principals
- operation, service and repair
- applications of vehicle science and mathematics
- vehicle electrical and electronic principals
- light vehicle transmission systems
- light vehicle suspension
- steering and braking systems
- vehicle engine management systems
- vehicle electronic ancillary and information systems
- engineering design & mechanical principals and applications.
Learners aged 16+ must have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above including Maths, English & Science and will be invited in for an interview and practical assessment.

The Sports department will also be offering a new Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Fitness Therapy in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University.
This exciting, new programme is intended for students who are employed or preparing for employment within the sport or therapy industry. In this course students will cover:
- practical sports development
- an introduction to training theory
- coaching practice and delivery
- health screening
- foundations of physical activity and health
- prevention and treatment of injury
- strength and conditioning for sport
- remedial and exercise rehabilitation
- coaching pedagogy.
During the Foundation Degree students will also be given the opportunity to study additional courses such as first aid, massage, gym instructor and coaching.
If you want to study on this course and you are over 21 years old you must have relevant work experience and your qualifications will be considered. If you are under 21 years old you must have 3 GCSE subjects at Grade C or higher (including Maths and English) and relevant A levels or Level 3 equivalents at merit grade or above.
