Police and fire service fight it out for charity

Date published: 16 April 2010

The police officers and fire fighters will be taking part in a knockout night of entertainment this Saturday 17 April 2010, as they don their gloves for the second annual charity boxing event at the De Vere Whites Hotel at the Reebok Stadium.

Last year’s event smashed expectation by raising more than £19,500 for charity as fighters were spurred on by more than 1,200 spectators. The police team were victorious on the night, but the fire service is keen this year to try and steal the trophy from their cabinet.

The 2010 event is set to be even more competitive, as the police team have continued to be trained from Gloves Community Gym in Bolton, while officers from the fire service have been trained from a separate camp at Moss Side Community Boxing Club, which is based at Moss Side Fire Station.

All of the boxers have been training hard for the past four months and put under a gruelling regime to prepare them for the fight night, in which officers from each side will compete against each other in individual bouts.

Police officers taking part are from the Bolton and Salford Divisions of Greater Manchester Police. Fire fighters are being recruited from all areas of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to take part in the event.

Anyone wishing to sponsor or make a donation to support this event, can do so by calling 01204 520 607.

Money raised will go to the Firefighters Charity, Amir Khan’s not-for-profit Gloves Gym and Greater Manchester Police's chosen charity.
