Distraction burglary

Date published: 31 August 2010

Police are hunting a woman who distracted an elderly couple to steal cash from them.

At around 6pm on (Wednesday 25 August 2010), the offender knocked on the door of a house on Nelson Drive, Droylsden.

She started chatting to the occupants and they invited her in. Once inside she asked to use the toilet and was shown upstairs. She entered a bedroom and rooted through the drawers where she found a large amount of cash.

The woman then left the house and walked down Holly Street.

She is described as white, about 40, a plump build with long brown hair in a pony tail, a black eye and wearing a black dress, coat and a black and white scarf.

Detective Constable Melanie Hutchinson, of Tameside CID, said: “This was a cynical plan to be-friend a vulnerable couple to steal cash from them.

“We are confident that someone would have seen this woman and want to reassure the victims and community that we are determined to catch her.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Tameside CID on 0161 856 9250 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.
