Tameside scores a first with iPhone app

Heard the term “we’ve got an app for that”? Well Tameside Council has scored a national first by providing an app which lets you find a Buy with Confidence trader through your iPhone.

No matter where you are, with just a couple of taps you can get full contact details for any one of almost 200 Trading Standards-approved Tameside traders and even get a map showing where they can be found.

The application is free and it’s available through the Apple Store – just search for Tameside – or at www.tameside.gov.uk/bwc and listen out for the commercials on 103.6FM Tameside Radio.

iPhones, the most commonly-used handheld device, are the latest medium through which Tameside Council’s services can be accessed, along with Mac and PC browsers and games consoles such as the PS3.

Cllr Catherine Piddington, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “The Buy with Confidence app is another way in which we can protect people from cowboy traders. And by being part of the Tameside Works First initiative it helps to support the local economy, too.”

And Cllr John Taylor, deputy leader of Tameside Council whose portfolio includes marketing, media and communications, added: “This is another way in which we are keeping up with changes in the way people access information. 

“An additional benefit is that the app allows the council to cut printing and postage costs by reducing the number of printed directories we need.
