Date published: 24 August 2010

Official GCSE results have now been released confirming that Tameside pupils have registered the borough’s best ever results by a big margin.

For the first time Tameside Secondary School pupils have achieved at the national level with a superb 69% of pupils achieving 5 or more A*-C grades. This is a 9% improvement on last year, which is twice as much as the national improvement.

Furthermore the figure for 5 or more A* to C grades including Mathematics and English has increased from 42% to 45.5%, again a record year and a bigger improvement than seen nationally. This is now the sixth year in succession that these results have improved.

Many schools registered their best ever results most notably at St. Thomas More Catholic College where a staggering 70% of pupils achieved 5+ A* - C grades including English and Mathematics.

Big increases were also recorded at Two Trees Sports College (13%), Alder and Copley High Schools (9%), Droylsden Girls Mathematics and Computing College (8%), Egerton Park Performing Arts College and Fairfield Science College (both 7%).

Cabinet Deputy for Lifelong Learning, Cllr Gerald Cooney said, “ I am delighted the official results have confirmed the progress being made by children in all our schools. These outstanding GCSE results, by far our best ever, really show that Tameside is continuing to improve at a rapid pace. I would like to congratulate all the pupils, parents, and school staff for their hard work. Well done to all!

“We are confident we can build on these results and achieve even more in the future. With our success in gaining additional Building Schools for the Future funding we will be ensuring that every Secondary School in Tameside will have state of the art buildings to go with top quality teaching and learning.”
