Greater Manchester Police investigate electoral fraud

Date published: 05 May 2010

Allegations of electoral fraud are being investigated in Rochdale and three other Greater Manchester boroughs.

Voters in Rochdale, north Manchester, Oldham and Bolton have all complained to police about alleged breaches of the electoral code of practice.

Officers are now investigating the multiple reports, which centre on postal ballots, to establish whether any crime has been committed.

Greater Manchester Police said they were working with election authorities.

Last week, BBC North West Tonight reported claims that voters in Oldham were being asked to hand over uncompleted postal ballot papers.

"Greater Manchester Police has received reports of electoral fraud in the Rochdale, North Manchester, Oldham and Bolton areas," a spokeswoman said.

"The reports refer to breaches of the electoral Code of Practice.

"Officers are working closely with the Electoral Commission and local election officers to establish if any crimes have been committed."
