Image 10 – School and college photography competition – winners announced
Date published: 25 February 2010
An interesting pose, saturated with colour and excellently lit are the comments which described this years winning entry in the Image 10 schools and colleges photography exhibition.
College student, Amie Newall’s portrait of Rosanna Murray scooped her the top prize of a digital camera and a photographic workshop for her college.
The annual competition, organised by Tameside Council showcases some of the borough’s best young artistic talent.
An Avatar inspired portrait by Robert Moffat won runner-up along with Danielle Saville for her portrait of ‘Lauren’.
A staggering 120 students entered the annual competition run by Tameside’s museums and galleries service.
And as the standard of entries was so high, an extra category of highly commended has been added to reward the pupils for their impressive and creative work.
The three highly commended went to Joel Montana with his work ‘Portrait of We 3’, Alex Sutton with ‘Robert Moffat’ and Leon Kenyon with his work ‘Ellie’
Councillor Jackie Lane, Project Head for Heritage and Tourism says of the exhibition: “Tameside has a wealth of young artistic talent. The theme ‘portraits’ was posed to all secondary and college students in the borough. And what a response! I think the standard of the entries speaks for itself; stunning, imaginative and truly creative poses. These images have such a youthful feel and seem to capture fantastically the creativity and flair of our extremely talented students here in Tameside.”
Marie Knudsen, Art Curator said: “We knew from last year that the pupils in Tameside are excellent and keen photographers, but we have been overwhelmed by the response this year. The pupils have shown great ingenuity and photographic skills which certainly made the selection process extremely enjoyable as well as very difficult.”
The pupils’ work will be on show at Central Art Gallery in Ashton-under-Lyne from Saturday 27 February until Saturday 8 May 2010.
